Once upon a time Auschwitz’s tracks rang out with the sound of carriages laden with their cargos of unfortunate souls. Packed trains lumbered along, transporting their passengers to what would be their final destination. Seven decades later, the scene has been showcased from a completely new perspective, and it’s truly haunting.

Now everything is silent and still. The trains stopped running long ago. Some say that even the birds refuse to fly overhead.

On January 27, 1945, Auschwitz, the infamous Nazi concentration camp, was liberated by Soviet troops. Seventy years later BBC News marked this important anniversary by capturing the harrowing location from a totally new angle.
